Maryellen Bowman, FNP- B.C., received her BSN and MSN from Saint Louis University and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Certification from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She has been with St. John’s Mercy for many years in various roles in several areas including General Medicine, Oncology, ICU and as Nurse Manager on Pediatrics/PICU. Welcome to Our Practice
The five physicians and three nurse practitioners at Des Peres Internal Medicine South are part of St. John’s Mercy Medical Group (SJMMG) and our five physicians are only on staff at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center (SJMMC).
Our entire staff looks forward to taking care of your medical needs. If you have any questions or concerns, please call our office manager, Jan Muschler, at 314-821-1313. Thank you again for choosing St. John’s Mercy Medical Group!
Nurse Practitioners
A Nurse Practitioner (N.P.) is a registered nurse with advanced academic and clinical experience, which enables the N.P. to diagnose and treat illnesses as part of our health care team. Working in collaboration with a physician, N.P.s provide high-quality, cost-effective care for patients and may prescribe certain medications, order tests, analyze test results and provide counseling on health care concerns and health maintenance.
Office Hours
Our office is open on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, 8 a.m.-4:15 p.m., and on Wednesday and Friday, 7a.m.-4:15 p.m. Our phones are answered daily from 8a.m.-4:30 p.m.
After-Hours Needs
Please call the exchange at 314-364-5222. Your physician or the physician on call will contact you within twenty (20) minutes. Non-urgent matters should be handled during normal business hours. When an emergency exists, seek immediate emergency services. The Emergency Department physician at SJMMC will contact your primary care physician.
New Symptoms
Each of our physicians block specific appointments daily for acutely ill patients. If your physician’s schedule is full, one of our N.P.s will see you or, if you choose, you may be seen by one of the other physicians.
Medication Refills
If you need a prescription refill, please allow 48 hours for processing and have your pharmacy phone number available when you call our office. For 90-day prescriptions, please have the name and fax number available for our staff.
Medical Advice
When you call our office with a question or concern, we may ask that you speak to our triage nurse, so that she may promptly assess the concern and relay you message appropriately to the physician. The triage nurse will speak directly to your physician and return your call. We will make every effort to address your concern and return your call during the same day. If you have not had a recent office visit, your physician may request that you make an appointment to be properly evaluated.
Hospital Stays
Should you be admitted to SJMMC, our physicians work with Mercy Hospitalist physicians to provide you with specialized hospital care for the management of acute illness during the hospital stay. Hospitalists are Internal Medicine Physicians working only in the hospital who care for our patients and remain in contact with our physicians concerning your progress.
Electronic Health Records
SJMMG and SJMMC currently are installing a new, state- of-the-art computer software program called “Epic.” This system provides St. John’s Mercy facilities, specialists and primary care physicians with a common Electronic Health Record (EHR) that allows information to be consistent and available as needed for your treatment. Your medical history, including medications, allergies, immunization records, laboratory results, test results, billing and insurance information will all be included in your secure, up-to-date electronic record.
Insurance Plan Participation
We accept most insurance plans. Please consult your health insurance plan to determine if your physician participates.
Insurance Cards And Co-pays
Please bring your insurance card and co-payment with you to each visit. Notify our front desk registration staff if you have a new insurance company.
Billing
SJMMG has a central physician billing office, which will handle most of your questions concerning your account. For billing questions, please call 314-364-4999. If they cannot help you, then call our office and ask for our billing department.
Central Referral Scheduling (CRS)
Your physician may decide to refer you to a specialist. St. John’s Mercy CRS will assist you with that referral and any HMO referral authorizations that you may need. Their phone number is 314-364-4574 or toll-free, 1-866-272-1428.
Central Test Scheduling (CTS)
Your physician may order tests for you that require an appointment. St. John’s Mercy CTS will call you to set up that appointment within 48 hours. If they do not call, you may contact them by calling 314-364-3300 or toll-free, 1-888-621- 8882.
